Before the outbreak of World War II on September 1, 1939, the German army had only five small air squadrons of fighters (Staffeln), which were to operate not only in the daytime, but also at night. Located in the very center of Germany, these squadrons undertook to prepare as much as possible the number of experienced pilots to conduct bombing in the most difficult weather and climatic conditions.
Meanwhile, the first attacks by British night bombers did Germany a little harm. The reason for this was very weak technology that did not allow pilots to efficiently throw bombs in the dark. Nevertheless, the fact that the bombing did take place, and their effectiveness, although slowly but steadily grew with the experience of pilots, the Luftwaffe leadership created a special flight group of fighter pilots, whose task was to protect the German airspace in the dark days.
The first, albeit unofficial group of fighter pilots became Nachtjagdgruppe under the leadership of Oberleutnant Wolfgang Falk and was called without a hitch: “The Fighter Wing”. This unit was based on the border with Denmark in the town of Aalborg and in April 1940 took part in operations in Denmark and Norway. Aalborg was significant in that it was one of the early radar warning centers of the lands of Northern Germany about the raids of British bombers ...
